How HOSA Treats Knowledge

HOSA is a Whole Human Systems Architecture. It maps how the many dimensions of the human being organise, interact and operate as one dynamic system, and how that organisation shapes human experience, capacity and change.

Building an architecture at this scale requires bringing knowledge from many fields and ways of knowing into relationship. It also requires being precise about what HOSA inherits, what HOSA brings into relationship, and what HOSA newly contributes.

Throughout our work, we distinguish what is established, what is developing, what HOSA synthesises, what HOSA proposes, what remains unknown, and what belongs to philosophical, spiritual, metaphysical or experiential inquiry.

We do not treat these forms of knowledge as equivalent nor do we require them to answer questions they were not designed to answer.

Six Ways We Treat Knowledge

01. Established Knowledge

What existing evidence supports

Knowledge, findings or principles supported by substantial convergent evidence, established bodies of research or broad scientific consensus within the relevant field.

HOSA may draw upon and locate this knowledge within its architecture without claiming the underlying knowledge as a HOSA discovery.

02. Developing Evidence

What incomplete evidence supports

Findings are supported by meaningful evidence where important questions, limitations, disagreement or uncertainty remain.

HOSA draws upon developing evidence while preserving the uncertainty that belongs to it.

03. HOSA Synthesis

Where HOSA puts pieces into relationship 

A HOSA Synthesis proposes patterns, relationships or organising dynamics that become visible when those pieces are considered together as parts of one dynamic human system.

The underlying knowledge may be established. The HOSA synthesis of that knowledge is a separate epistemic claim.

04. HOSA Proposition

Where HOSA goes beyond the Map

HOSA develops original constructs, models, relationships, principles, proposed laws, explanations and predictions arising from its Whole-System architecture.

These may be informed by established knowledge, developing evidence, observation, systems reasoning and previous HOSA synthesis.

They remain identifiable as HOSA Propositions unless and until evidence warrants a different status.

A proposition does not become established simply because its individual parts are established.

05. Open Question

Where We Don't Know Yet

Some questions remain unresolved.

 

Some require better evidence or HOSA-specific testing. Some may reveal that an existing proposition needs to change.

HOSA identifies these as Open Questions rather than filling uncertainty with certainty. 

HOSA is in its embryonic stage as of 26/27, actively testing HOSA with Practitioners, Doctors and Medical Healthcare professionals as part of this. The results are already promising.

06. Philosophical & Experiential 

Where the Meaningful extends beyond what can be empirically decidable.

Some questions concerning consciousness, meaning, purpose, spirituality, metaphysics and the nature of human existence sit partly or wholly outside what empirical science can presently establish.

We distinguish these explorations from empirical scientific claims and do not present philosophical, spiritual or metaphysical propositions as scientifically established simply because they are meaningful or coherent within the architecture. Their inclusion does not require us to collapse them into science or science into them.

Sources of Inquiry Are Not the Same as Status of Knowledge

HOSA draws upon scientific research, systematic observation, practitioner knowledge, lived experience, philosophy and other traditions of inquiry.

These can reveal different dimensions of the human system. They are not interchangeable, do not answer the same kinds of questions, and do not necessarily carry the same epistemic weight.

Our Three Lenses describe how and where we look.

Our Six Ways of Treating Knowledge describe how we hold what we find.

Source tells us where an insight came from. Status tells us what we are entitled to say about it.

Evidence for the Pieces Is Not Evidence for the Architecture

HOSA draws upon substantial bodies of existing knowledge. Evidence supporting those individual phenomena, mechanisms or relationships matters — but does not, by itself, validate HOSA's synthesis of them or the original propositions that emerge from the architecture.

That distinction works both ways.

HOSA does not claim established knowledge as its own discovery. Nor does it present an original HOSA synthesis or proposition as established simply because its component parts are well supported.

The pieces have their evidence. The relationships HOSA proposes require scrutiny in their own right.

HOSA Constructs & Models

Lots of the architecture is ours.

HOSA introduces and materially defines constructs, models, relationships and organising principles that make Whole-System organisation visible, teachable and usable.

These include but are not limited to: 

1. Human Operating System (HOS),
2. The distinction that you have a Thinking Self and you have HOS.
3. HOSA's Governing Equation: Recovery Capacity =  Total Energy - (Threat Load + Biological Load),
4. Threat Debt
5. The HOSA Ladder representing 5 unique stages of stable Biological Organisation
6. The Thinking Self Architecture
7. The 5 domains of being human: Mind, Body, Soul, Vocation, Relation

We identify these as HOSA constructs, models, syntheses or propositions rather than presenting them as established constructs from another field.

The HOSA Equation expresses a proposed relationship between available capacity and the demands placed upon the human system. It is a reliable and usable conceptual model within HOSA's architecture, not an established physiological equation.

HOSA & Science: 
Grounded in science. Not confined to what science has already organised.

Science provides indispensable knowledge about the human system.

 

HOSA draws extensively from it with a specific ongoing inquiry: 

How do we reliably create change that holds? The kind that reliably transforms a person's whole life?

That inquiry can reveal relationships, generate synthesis and give rise to new propositions and questions. Questions like : What becomes visible when the pieces are put back into relationship, across levels, as one dynamic human system within its field?

HOSA does not present those propositions as scientific consensus simply because their parts are scientifically supported.

Equally, empirical validation is not the only form of legitimate inquiry. Questions of meaning, consciousness, philosophy, spirituality and metaphysics may require different methods and different standards of knowing.

We do not collapse those forms of inquiry into science, or science into them. We make the distinction visible.

Precision includes uncertainty

A Whole Human Systems Architecture should make the boundaries of knowledge more visible, not less.

Where knowledge is established, we identify it.

Where evidence is developing, we preserve its uncertainty.

Where HOSA brings existing knowledge into a new relationship, we identify the synthesis.

Where HOSA proposes something new, we identify the proposition.

Where a question remains unresolved, we leave it open.

And where inquiry belongs to philosophical, experiential, spiritual or metaphysical territory, we do not disguise it as an empirical scientific claim. Precision means knowing not only what we can say, but what kind of claim we are making when we say it.

What would change HOSA?

The architecture is accountable to what we discover.

 

HOSA is not intended to become a closed system in which every observation becomes confirmation of HOSA.

 

Where a proposition makes empirical claims or predictions, those claims should be open to empirical scrutiny.

Evidence may strengthen a proposition, refine it, constrain it or require it to change. Reliable evidence that contradicts an empirically testable HOSA proposition may require that proposition to be modified or rejected.

Other questions require different forms of inquiry. Their evaluation should be appropriate to the kind of claim being made.

The purpose of the architecture is to make the human system more intelligible. We fully expect the architecture to continue to evolve, correct and expand as we go.

A Living Architecture
 

HOSA is ambitious by design.

It attempts to make visible the organisation and relational dynamics of a human system whose dimensions are frequently researched, understood and addressed separately.

That ambition carries a corresponding responsibility for precision.

We can be bold about what HOSA sees without confusing synthesis with established knowledge.

We can make original propositions without pretending they have already been proven.

We can work beyond existing disciplinary boundaries without misrepresenting what those disciplines establish.

We can engage questions science cannot presently settle without presenting belief, experience or philosophy as scientific fact.

And we can change the architecture when better knowledge requires it.

The goal is to make the Whole Human increasingly legible with enough precision to distinguish what we know, what we see, what we propose, and what we do not yet know.
