The HOSA Lens: Nature Before Theory

As a physician and scientist, I was trained to look for evidence, mechanism and explanation. But there is something that necessarily comes before all three:
The phenomenon itself.
Nature does not wait for us to understand it.
Objects fell before Newton described gravity. Newton's model then allowed us to describe and predict gravitational phenomena with extraordinary accuracy.
Centuries later, Einstein fundamentally changed our understanding of what gravity was. The phenomenon remained. Our explanation of it evolved.
Infectious disease existed before germ theory. Semmelweis observed that handwashing dramatically reduced maternal deaths before the scientific community had an adequate explanation for why. The observation was real before the mechanism was understood.
Circadian rhythms existed long before we identified the molecular machinery of the biological clock. Organisms were responding to cycles of light and darkness long before we had words such as circadian, suprachiasmatic nucleus or clock genes with which to describe what was occurring.
This distinction matters.
A phenomenon does not acquire its existence from our explanation of it.
Science begins by observing nature. We identify regularities. We measure them. We propose models capable of explaining them. Good models generate predictions. We test those predictions against reality. When observation and model disagree sufficiently, it is the model that must eventually give way.
This is the scientific position from which I approach HOSA.
The human organism is already doing something
Long before HOSA existed, human beings were organising, adapting, protecting, compensating, regulating, conserving energy, recovering and changing.
We can observe that a person can cognitively know they are safe while their physiology continues to behave as though a threat is present.
We can observe that the same external event can produce profoundly different responses in different people.
We can observe that sleep loss does not affect only sleep. It changes attention, cognition, endocrine signalling, metabolism, emotional regulation, immune function and our capacity to respond to stress.
We can observe that light entering the eye is not merely producing vision. Its timing provides biological information capable of altering circadian timing, hormone secretion, sleep and cellular physiology.
We can observe that prolonged stress is not neatly contained within something called "the mind." Its effects can be expressed across neurological, autonomic, endocrine, metabolic, immune, cardiovascular, digestive and behavioural systems.
We can observe that human beings frequently understand what they want to change, understand why they behave as they do, sincerely intend to behave differently — and nevertheless continue to reproduce the same response.
And we can observe something particularly important: capacities that appear unavailable to a human being under one set of physiological and environmental conditions can become available again when those conditions change.
None of these phenomena belongs to HOSA.
They belong to nature.
So what is HOSA claiming?
HOSA proposes that the human organism is an organised living system — and that change within that system is lawful.
That matters because we tend to treat human change as though intention, insight, effort or intervention should be sufficient to produce it.
Nature suggests otherwise.
Water provides a simple illustration. Ice and liquid water are the same substance in different states. Which state exists depends upon the conditions of the system. Alter those conditions sufficiently, cross a threshold, and its organisation changes.
Humans are not water, and human change is vastly more complex. The principle is the point:
What a system can do is constrained by how that system is currently organised and the conditions maintaining that organisation.
HOSA proposes that human change is no exception.
A person can understand what needs to change, acquire new skills and genuinely improve — yet return to an earlier pattern when load increases or conditions change.
HOSA wants to examine: What determines whether Change Fades, Holds or Transforms?
HOSA proposes that these outcomes are not arbitrary. If the conditions maintaining an organisation remain, some changes may be possible while others remain constrained.
Work downstream of a dominant constraint may produce relief or temporary change without reorganising the system maintaining the pattern. Change the relevant conditions, reduce the dominant constraint or cross a consequential threshold, and previously unavailable capacities may become available.
In this sense:
Change is subordinate to the organisation, constraints and conditions of the system.
That proposition is testable.
If HOSA accurately models human organisation, it should increasingly allow us to identify:

This is the organisation.

This is what is maintaining it.

This is what can and cannot reliably change from here.

This intervention may help, but the change is unlikely to hold because this constraint remains.

This must change first.
-
And if it does, this is what we predict becomes possible next.
That is the scientific opportunity within HOSA.
Not merely to explain retrospectively why something happened, but to predict the sequence and conditions of change — and then observe whether the predicted change occurs.
If it does repeatedly, confidence in the model increases.
If it does not, the model must change.
The territory has authority over the map.
HOSA is the map. The human organism is the territory.
Some mechanisms represented within HOSA are well established; other relationships remain propositions to be investigated. We should be explicit about the difference.
Observation is not mechanism. Correlation is not causation. A useful model is not established fact.
But an incomplete mechanism does not make an observable phenomenon disappear.
So the HOSA Lens remains deliberately simple:
Nature first.
Phenomenon before explanation.
Conditions before change.
Prediction before confidence.
Evidence before certainty.
And when the map and the territory disagree, the territory wins.
